Until the late 1930s the Royal Kashmir Polo team flourished under the patronage of late Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu & Kashmir. Some of the well known personalities whom he patronized were Rao Raja Hanut Singh, Gaje Singh, Maharaj Prem Singh, Nawab Khusro Jung. The hill station of Gulmarg was home to the highest Polo field in the world, situated at an altitude of 11,000 ft. The other more played grounds were in Jammu and Srinagar. From the 1920s upto early 1940s, Srinagar was the major summer Polo center for the Indian Princes. Famous Australian 10 goal Polo player Bob Skene, played Polo with the Maharaja for several years. He was also responsible for shipping dozens of Polo ponies each year from Australia to the royal stables in India.
Today, the Royal Kashmir Polo team is run by his grandson, Yuvraj Vikramaditya Singh who is a forth generation Polo player. He has some of the best Polo ponies in the country and hires well known Indian and international professionals to play on the team. Over the years, he has patronized several players and helped them to turn professionals.
In the past 12 years, the Royal Kashmir team has played and won tournaments for the Hindustan Times, Taj Group of Hotels, Damania Airways, the RPG group, Modiluft, Torrent, Jack Daniels, LG, ABN AMRO Bank, AIWA and others.

The team won decisively, beating Oberoi 7 to 4 goals. It also won both tournaments in the Jodhpur inaugural Polo season in March, which was promoted by H.H. Maharaja Gaj Singh. The Royal Kashmir team won both the Indian Open Championship and the Maharaja Gaj Singh cup again in February-March 2001, for the second year running.
